Liverpool close to securing £35m deal for former Chelsea winger

Liverpool are edging nearer to making their first major splash in the summer transfer window as they close in on a £35m deal for Roma winger Mohamed Salah, reports The Guardian.

Jurgen Klopp has earmarked the signing of the former Chelsea forward as the ideal signing to help bolster his offensive options as the Liverpool manager looks to add more pace to his front free.

Roma knocked back Liverpool’s opening £28m bid for the Egypt international but the Premier League giants have returned with an improved offer and could even complete a deal by the end of this week.

Liverpool were beaten to Salah's signature by Premier League rivals Chelsea in 2014, but the 24-year-old failed to make any impact at Stamford Bridge before returning to Italy 12 months later.

Klopp is so determined to finally bring the Roma ace to Anfield that Liverpool are even prepared to make him the joint-most expensive player in the club’s history, matching the £35m they paid Newcastle for Andy Carroll in January 2011.

Salah has excelled since joining Roma and finished the 2016/17 campaign as one of only eight players that managed to register double figures for goals (15) and assists (11) in Europe’s top five leagues.
