2019/20 Ligue 1 season all but over

The 2019/20 Ligue 1 and Ligue 2 season is effectively over after French prime minister Edouard Philippe announced that no sporting events would take place until September at the earliest. 

There has been no Ligue 1 action since March 8th and no Ligue 2 football since March 9th, with all football suspended due to the ongoing global Coronavirus pandemic. 

There had been hopes that teams would return to training in May with a view to restarting the 2019/20 campaign in June in order to play out the final 10 gameweeks of the season. 

However, Philippe's announcement effectively ends the season with a view to returning to training later this year with a view to kicking off 2020/21 without a hitch. 

While unveiling France's lockdown exit strategy, Philippe said, via ESPN: "Big sporting events will not be able to take place before September. 

"The 2019/20 season, notably for football, will not be able to resume." 

The decision to cancel the remainder of the domestic season in France throws a spanner in the works of the Champions League, with PSG progressing to the quarter-finals of the competition at the expense of Borussia Dortmund last month. 

France follows in the footsteps of the Netherlands, who cancelled the remainder of the Eredivisie campaign last week.
