Atletico Madrid eye Arsenal forward

Atletico Madrid will rekindle their interest in Alexandre Lacazette if they miss out on Paris Saint-Germain striker Edinson Cavani at the end of the season, claims MARCA.

Diego Simeone has made signing a new world class striker his number one priority in the summer in a bid to close the gap on rivals Barcelona and Real Madrid.

Diego Costa, Alvaro Morata and Joao Felix have all failed to fill the void left by former star Antonine Griezmann this season.

The Spanish giants have been heavily linked with a move for Cavani, who is out of contract at the end of the current campaign, but have yet to get a deal over the line.

Simeone's side remain confident of signing Cavani on a Bosman transfer but have earmarked Lacazette as their Plan B.

Lacazette's future is up in the air just two-and-a-half years on from signing the France international from Lyon in a deal worth £46.5m.

It is widely expected that one of Lacazette or Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang will leave Arsenal at the end of the season.

Lacazette was actually on course to join Atletico before signing for Arsenal but a FIFA-imposed transfer ban ended Simeone's pursuit of the 28-year-old.

The former Lyon striker has struggled to establish himself as Arsenal's main striker since Aubameyang's arrival in January 2018 and only has five goals in 15 league appearances this term.

In fact, Lacazette scored less league goals in his first two seasons at Arsenal (27) than his last campaign with Lyon (28).
