Athletic Club have offered Aymeric Laporte a new contract extension in a bid to ward off interest from Manchester City, reports AS, via Get French Football.
Laporte, 21, will be sidelined for four months with a broken ankle sustained during France Under-21’s match against Scotland last week.
The France Under-21 international had been heavily linked with a move to City prior to that and there had even been reports suggesting the Premier League outfit had matched his £39m release clause.
However, Athletic Club have moved to ward off interest by offering the central defender a contract extension that would make him the best paid player at the club. They are also hopeful of increasing his release clause in the contract talks.
The injury sustained to Laporte will significantly hamper Athletic’s chances of winning the Europa League this season. The Frenchman has excelled in UEFA’s second tier competition this season and it is unsurprising to find out that no player has completed more interceptions than the Athletic defender this season (38).
