United bid £35m for Ighalo

Louis van Gaal bid £35m for Watford striker Odion Ighalo in January in a bid to save Manchester United’s season, according to The Sunday Times, via 101 Great Goals.

With United in fifth and nine points off Arsenal at the start of 2016, Van Gaal was reportedly desperate to add fresh blood into the squad in order to salvage something from their season.

This caused the Dutchman to turn to Watford striker Ighalo but the Hornets rejected their staggering £35m before Van Gaal eventually stumbled across Marcus Rashford in the youth team.

As it turns out, Ighalo would endure a poor 2016 having scored 13 goals in 19 league games in the first half of the season. The Watford frontman would then only go on to score two goals in 18 league matches.
