England boss Southgate names exciting young squad for October fixtures

England manager Gareth Southgate has handed James Maddison, Jadon Sancho and Mason Mount their first ever senior call-ups ahead of upcoming matches against Croatia and Spain.

The Three Lions are scheduled to play two more UEFA Nations League matches, starting in Croatia on 12 October before travelling to play Spain three days later.

Maddison and Sancho have caught the eye for Leicester and Borussia Dortmund, respectively, while Derby’s Mount has been promoted from the England U21 squad.

Mount, on loan from Chelsea, has been tipped for a big future but his inclusion in Southgate’s squad has come as a huge surprise.

Southgate has also given Ross Barkley his first call-up in two years, while drafting Watford midfielder Nathaniel Chalobah and Tottenham ace Harry Winks back into the fold.

Sancho is arguably the most eye-catching inclusion in Southgate’s 25-man squad. The 18-year-old has registered the most assists in Europe’s top five leagues this season (5) despite only making substitute appearances.
