Manchester United target refuses to rule out Tottenham stay

Toby Alderweireld has conceded he could still stay at Tottenham next season amid reports of a summer move to Manchester United.

The Belgium international dropped down the pecking order at Tottenham last season and has been tipped to leave this summer.

Tottenham have failed to agree a new deal with Alderweireld and are refusing to match his demand of being one of the club’s top earners.

Alderweireld has entered the final 12 months of his existing deal but Tottenham have an option to extend his stay by another year.

United were hopeful of signing Alderweireld in a £50m deal but Tottenham are refusing to budge from their £70m valuation.

The 29-year-old has previously hinted at wanting to leave Tottenham but has now suggested his future could still be in north London.

“Yeah, why not?” Sky Sports quote Alderweireld as saying when asked whether he could stay at Tottenham this summer.

“I have two years left on my contract. I don’t know what is going to happen.”

Alderweireld is considered one of the best defenders in the Premier League but Tottenham are willing to sell following the emergence of Davinson Sanchez last season.

The Tottenham No.4 was limited to just 14 league appearances last term after suffering a three-month injury lay-off midway through the season.

Not outfielder completed more long balls per Premier League game than Alderweireld last season (7.9).
