Real Madrid scout rising Atletico Madrid starlet

Real Madrid are interested in what would be a controversial swoop for Atletico Madrid left-back Theo Hernandez, according to The Independent.

Hernandez, the younger brother of Atletico centre-back Lucas, has enjoyed an outstanding campaign on loan at La Liga side Alaves this season and is widely regarded as one of the best young players in Europe.

Manchester City manager Pep Guardiola was interested in the pair last summer but could now face competition from Madrid, Liverpool and Bayern Munich, who have all had their eye on the youngster this season.

Diego Simeone expects Hernandez to return to Atletico in the summer and fight for his place in the team next season but faces a tall order usurping Filipe Luis, who is one of the best left-backs in Europe.

Atletico may have to hope Hernandez is patient and realise that Luis will not be at the peak of his powers for the foreseeable future, as the former Chelsea defender will be 32 by the time next season starts.

However, while Hernandez still has a contract with Atletico until 2021, the 19-year-old’s €24m (£20.5m) release clause makes him a hugely obtainable option for any club in Europe looking for the signature of one of the most promising young talents on the continent.

Atletico’s cross-city rivals have been on the market for a new left-back to provide competition for places for Marcelo for quite some time, while Liverpool have spent all season with James Milner, a midfielder, at left-back and will surely be looking for an upgrade on Alberto Moreno in the summer.

Only Luis (65) has completed more dribbles of all defenders in La Liga this season than Hernandez (57).
