Marseille beat Crystal Palace to Juventus defender

Marseille have announced they have signed Patrice Evra from Juventus on a deal until the end of next season.

Evra, 35, was expected to leave Juventus this month after dropping below Alex Sandro in the pecking order under Max Allegri but had been linked with a return to Manchester United or surprise switch to Premier League strugglers Crystal Palace.

However, the France international has now penned an 18-month deal with Marseille and returns to French football for the first time since 2006, when United signed him from Monaco.

The 35-year-old defender will provide Marseille with experience that they lack and also helps Rudi Garcia find a temporary solution to what has become a troublesome area of the pitch at left-back this season.

Marseille have already used four players at left-back throughout the course of the season in Ligue 1 and are currently short in that area with both Henri Bedimo and Tomas Hubocan ruled out with injury.
