Jack Wilshere has been ruled out for the remainder of the season after scan results have revealed the Arsenal midfielder has a hairline fracture in his lower left leg, reports The Daily Telegraph.
The 25-year-old, who has spent the season on loan at Bournemouth, was forced off during the Cherries’ 4-0 defeat to Tottenham at the weekend just prior to the hour mark following an accidental collision with Harry Kane that was met with cheers from the Tottenham supporters.
Initial scan results showed Wilshere had avoided a broken foot but follow up tests have shown the England international is now set for another lengthy spell on the sidelines, adding to what has been an immensely frustrating career for the midfielder.
Wilshere was sent on loan to Bournemouth in order to revive his career after dropping down the pecking order at Arsenal following a series of serious long-term injuries and his future at the Emirates has been thrown into further doubt following this latest blow.
Arsene Wenger was adamant he wanted Wilshere to sign a new contract with the club at the end of the season but it remains to be seen whether this latest injury will change the club’s mind.
Wilshere’s current deal is due to expire at the end of the current season and he hasn’t shown the form at Bournemouth that would suggest he could return to Arsenal and find a way back into the team ahead of the likes of Aaron Ramsey, Granit Xhaka, Alex Oxlade-Chamberlain and Mohamed Elneny.
Only Kevin de Bruyne (8) and Paul Pogba (6) have been denied by the woodwork more times in the Premier League this season than Wilshere (5), who will finish the season without a Premier League goal to his name.
