Manchester City considering England international as Mendy alternative
Manchester City are now weighing up a move for Southampton left-back Ryan Bertrand with Monaco demanding £40m for first choice target Benjamin Mendy, reports The Daily Mail.
Pep Guardiola’s side have already signed Bernardo Silva from Monaco and were expected to make Mendy their second addition from the Ligue 1 champions but negotiations have stalled with the price being demanded the sticking point.
Mendy established himself as one of the finest left-backs in Europe this season and Monaco will not entertain offers south of £40m, which has forced City to re-think their transfer strategy.
City have previously been linked with a move for Bertrand and Guardiola is now weighing up whether to rekindle his interest in the former Chelsea defender this summer as he would represent a far more affordable option.
The international break has complicated matters further and nothing is expected to be completed until later in the month when they will continue to work on talks with Monaco and also monitor Bertrand’s situation at Southampton.
In the last three Premier League campaigns only Jose Fonte (237) has completed more interceptions for Southampton that Bertrand (184).
