Celtic confirm Roberts return

Celtic have announced that Patrick Roberts has returned to the club on a season-long loan.

Roberts, 20, had been on loan with the Scottish Premiership the past 18 months, though it looked as though they would miss out on the youngster after a host of teams had registered an interest in the Manchester City winger.

“Celtic are delighted to announce that Patrick Roberts has rejoined the club on a season-long loan from Manchester City. The 20-year-old enjoyed a highly-successful 18-month loan spell in Paradise, scoring 17 goals in 60 appearances and playing a part in four trophy triumphs,” a statement read on the club’s official website.

“After moving to the Hoops from City in January 2016, the wing wizard soon broke into the starting XI and helped them to a fifth successive league title.

“Under Brendan Rodgers last season, Roberts was one of the stars of the Treble Invincibles, his skills and spectacular goals making him a firm favourite among the Celtic supporters.

“And after putting pen to paper today, Roberts admitted that the opportunity to star in front of the Hoops faithful again and play under the Irishman were big factors in his decision to return to Paradise.”

On the deal, Roberts said: “All the support and love I have been getting has been brilliant.

“I love it here and to be back is great and I’m thankful to be finally here.

“We had a good end to the season, which obviously helped, and playing for these great fans was also a factor coming back. It’s great to be back and I can’t wait to get going again.

“The manager has been brilliant with me. He obviously wanted me back and so did Celtic. I had a decision to make after pre-season and when that came around Brendan Rodgers was obviously a huge factor in that. He is a top manager. I worked under him all of last year and I believe I can develop under him even more and become a better player."

Roberts has been handed the iconic number 7 shirt and added: “It’s a massive honour to wear this iconic Celtic number. I know some of the great players who have worn it in the past and I will wear it with pride.
