Ex-Tottenham defender Vertonghen snubs Ajax and Inter

Jan Vertonghen is set to undergo his Benfica medical before penning a three-year deal with the Portuguese outfit, claims HLN.

The Belgium international is a free agent after his contract with Tottenham expired following eight years at the club.

Vertonghen has been heavily linked with a move to Serie A, with the likes of Roma and Inter linked, while old club Ajax were also interested in re-signing the 33-year-old.

However, it has now emerged Vertonghen is poised to sign for Benfica on a deal that will carry him through until he is 36.

Now that Jardel has entered the final 12 months of his current Benfica deal and potentially moving on this summer, Vertonghen arrives to provide experience at the back.

Ferro and Ruben Dias, both 23, were Benfica's first-choice centre-back pairing in 2019/20 as the Eagles ended up five points behind champions FC Porto.

Vertonghen was limited to just 19 Premier League starts in his last season for Tottenham, his lowest ever return for the club.

Tottenham had a better win ratio in the Premier League when Vertonghen did not start (47.4%) compared to when he did feature from the off (36.8%).
