Bayern confirm interest in United target

Bayern Munich chief executive Karl-Heinz Rummenigge has confirmed they are interested in re-signing Borussia Dortmund captain Mats Hummels in the summer.

Hummels, 27, has just over a year left on his current deal at Dortmund and is widely expected to leave the club at the end of the season.

The Germany international has been heavily linked with a move to Manchester United and Barcelona in the past, but now appears close to returning to Bayern, seven years after leaving for Dortmund.

“I can basically confirm what [Dortmund CEO Hans-Joachim] Watzke said, that Mats is considering Bayern,” Rummenigge told Sport1.de, via ESPN ahead of Bayern’s Champions League semi-final against Atletico Madrid.

“There are three sides to this affair, though, and I would ask for understanding that I do not want to go into further detail about this here and now.

“We have to bear in mind that he has a contract and I would not like to damage the very good relationship that we have built up with Dortmund over the past two years by making one imprudent remark.”

Hummels took has time to warm to the season but his performances by and large have been better over the second half of the season. Furthermore, only teammate Julian Weigl has a higher pass success rate than Hummels (89%) of players to have made at least 10 appearances in the Europa League this season.
