Team News

St. Johnstone
Motherwell
  • St Johnstone boss Craig Levein made just one change after Saints were swept aside 2-0 by Rangers at Hampden in the Scottish League Cup, before they lost at Tannadice to Dundee United by the same scoreline on league duty at the weekend.
  • Josh Rae continued in goal behind an unchanged back three of Lewis Neilson, Kyle Cameron and Jack Sanders. Andre Raymond started at left wing-back with Drey Wright chosen on the right hand-side.
  • Graham Carey and Matt Smith were joined in the middle of the park by young Ghanaian midfielder Aaron Essel, who took Cammy MacPherson's place. Benji Kimpioka started in attack alongside Adama Sidibeh who was sent off last Saturday.
  • Motherwell manager Stuart Kettlewell named just one change after the Steelmen advanced into the Scottish League Cup quarter-final with a 1-0 win against Kilmarnock before they clinched a 3-1 victory versus Hearts at Fir Park on Sunday.
  • Aston Oxborough continued in goal behind an unchanged back three of Dan Casey, Liam Gordon and Paul McGinn, who headed home the opener at the weekend. Stephen O'Donnell, who scored the second, remained at right wing-back.
  • Ewan Wilson moved back to the left hand-side, as Davor Zdravkovski and Andy Halliday started in the middle of the park. Lennon Miller and Tawanda Maswanhise, who replaced Steve Seddon, supported lone striker Zach Robinson.

Prediction

  • St Johnstone and Motherwell meet at McDiarmid Park, with the two teams having shared the spoils in three of four league meetings in the Scottish Premiership last season.
  • Saints' decent recent record against Dundee United at Tannadice came to an end, as they had previously gone seven games without defeat. They missed out on the chance to win three consecutive Scottish Premiership games away from home for the first time since December 2018, when they won six on the spin, but they beat Motherwell in their last league meeting at Fir Park.
  • Motherwell had previously won just one of their last seven home league games before they avoided a third straight defeat to Hearts on Sunday. The Steelmen were winless against St Johnstone in their four Scottish Premiership meetings last season, drawing three times and losing the last one, having last beaten Saints in Perth back in May 2023 thanks to a 2-0 victory on their travels.
  • St Johnstone essentially secured their Scottish Premiership survival last season thanks to a win at Fir Park over Motherwell, but the Well will hope to clinch a long-awaited win over Saints this Saturday.
