Team News

Celtic
Kilmarnock
  • Reigning champions Celtic have only made two signings, both of which in the same position to replace the retired Joe Hart and Benjamin Siegrist. Danish international Kasper Schmeichel has signed on a free transfer from Anderlecht.
  • Viljami Sinisalo has signed from Aston Villa, with the Finnish shotstopper coming in as deputy for the former Leicester and Nice goalkeeper. Alexandro Bernabei has returned to South America, the Argentinian left-back signing for Brazilian side Internacional.
  • Swedish-born winger Sead Haksabanovic has left Celtic for Swedish side Malmo, after spending last season on loan at Stoke City. Hyeon-gyu Oh has also left Parkhead on a permanent deal, joining Belgian outfit Genk.
  • Continuity could be key for Killie, as Kilmarnock have only signed three players after such a successful 2023/24 campaign. Goalkeeper Robby McCrorie has swapped Rangers for Killie, signing on a permanent transfer.
  • Irish full-back Corrie Ndaba, who was on loan at Kilmarnock last year, has swapped Premier League new boys Ipswich Town for Killie and signed a three-year deal.
  • Striker Bruce Anderson has also signed for Killie after leaving recently relegated Livingston. Defender Jack Sanders and attacker Greg Stewart have left the club, for St Johnstone and Indian side Mohun Bagan SG respectively.

Prediction

  • Two of last season's top four meet in Glasgow's east end, as Celtic host Kilmarnock at Parkhead amongst a trio of Scottish Premiership fixtures on Sunday.
  • Celtic's objective is simple, retain the Scottish Premiership title. Kilmarnock were the team that denied the possibility of a treble, knocking the Hoops out of the League Cup but the reigning champions will want to go one better and attempt to win the treble. Competing in Europe will prove tricky, and should probably be seen as a bonus while continuing to dominate domestically.
  • As for Kilmarnock, they too will want to replicate last season's exploits or potentially sneak into the top three and go one better despite fierce competition for top six and European places. Having had a sample of continental action, and dropping into the Europa Conference League after losing to Cercle Brugge in Belgium on Thursday night, Killie will be desperate to maintain that.
  • Given Killie were over in Belgium in midweek - they may look somewhat leggy this weekend - and reigning champions Celtic have looked slick in pre-season, the Hoops should kick off the campaign with a win in this one.
