Team News

Dundee United
Hearts
  • Dundee United manager Jim Goodwin named just one change to the Terrors team that left it late to beat Aberdeen at Tannadice by a sole goal, before another late winner saw them beat Dundee 2-1 at Dens in the derby to start 2025 in style.
  • Jack Walton continued in goal behind Emmanuel Adegboyega and Kevin Holt. Will Ferry and Ryan Strain started at left-back and right-back respectively once more. The sole change saw club captain Ross Docherty make a first start since the beginning of October.
  • David Babunski made way for the skipper to accompany Vicko Sevelj in midfield. A trio of Glenn Middleton, Luca Stephenson and Kristijan Trapanovski supported lone striker Sam Dalby, the derby matchwinner and division's top scorer.
  • Hearts boss Neil Critchley named two changes after the Jambos' collapse against Ross County in their disappointing 2-2 draw in Dingwall, before a sole goal success against Motherwell at Tynecastle meant that 2025 began with a victory.
  • Craig Gordon was chosen in goal again for the Jambos, as Craig Halkett replaced Daniel Oyegoke to partner Kye Rowles in front of him. Adam Forrester continued at right-back with James Penrice remaining at left-back.
  • Jorge Grant was joined by Cammy Devlin in midfield, as he replaced Beni Baningime in the middle of the park. Midweek matchwinner Musa Drammeh and Blair Spittal joined Liam Boyce, in support of teenage talent James Wilson up front.

Prediction

  • Both Dundee United and Heart of Midlothian kicked off 2025 with victories in the Scottish Premiership, as the team in third place take on last season's 'best of the rest' at Tannadice.
  • Dundee United clinched a first top-tier Dundee derby win at Dens Park since September 2014, to overtake Aberdeen into third place in the Scottish Premiership table on Thursday evening. The last three Dundee derbies had all ended in draws, before United ended that streak with a late winner. After leapfrogging the Dons, their aim will be to stay in the top three places of the division.
  • It's been a miserable season for Heart of Midlothian so far but the Jambos will be delighted to have kept their decent recent record at home to Motherwell going, after beating the Steelmen by a sole goal on Thursday afternoon. Hearts have now won five of their last six matches against the Well at Tynecastle, but it wasn't enough to see them ascend out of the relegation playoff place.
  • Dundee United have taken 11 points from their last six, with Hearts taking 10. However, it was the Terrors who emerged victorious in the reverse fixture at Tynecastle so they'll fancy beating the Jambos at Tannadice too.
