Leicester announce arrival of Jonny Evans

Leicester have completed their second transfer of the summer after announcing the arrival of Jonny Evans from West Brom on a three-year deal until 2021.

Evans has been heavily linked with a move away from West Brom in the last 12 months and has now secured an immediate return to the Premier League.

Manchester City and Arsenal have both registered interested in the Northern Ireland international in the last year but Leicester have won the race for his signature.

Claude Puel’s side have signed Evans in a deal worth just £3.5m due to a relegation release clause in his contract with West Brom.

“It’s great to join and I’m happy it’s all gone through,” Evans told the club’s official website. “When this opportunity came up, it’s one that I couldn’t turn down.

“It’s an ambitious club, the owners are ambitious and everyone wants to push the club forward.

“I hope that I can give lots to the team and the club. It’s a great place to play football, the fans really get behind the team and the players are fantastic – these are all factors that made me want to sign for this football club.”

Puel has made great strides in bolstering his defensive options this summer, having already secured the services of highly-rated Porto right-back Ricardo Pereira.

Leicester signed Harry Maguire last summer and now Evans will provide competition with captain Wes Morgan as the club’s other central defender.

In the last three Premier League campaigns, only four players have won possession in the defensive third more times than Evans (368).
