Manchester United officially announce Ighalo's arrival

Manchester United have announced the arrival of Odion Ighalo from Chinese Super League outfit Shanghai Shenhua on loan for the rest of the season.

Ighalo has the spent the last three years in China after an 18-month stint at Watford and has now completed a shock move to join the club he supported as a child.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer's desperate search for a new striker concluded with Ighalo after failed attempts to sign Erling Haaland, Edinson Cavani, Dries Mertens, Teemu Pukki and Joshua King.

With Marcus Rashford out injured for three months, Solskjaer believes it is imperative United got a short-term fix in up front to bolster their chances of finishing in the top four.

Tottenham made a last ditch play to hi-jack United's most for Ighalo but the former Nigeria international was only interested in signing for the Red Devils.

The 30-year-old scored 46 goals in 76 league appearances in China spread across spells at Changchun Yatai and Shanghai Shenhua.

Ighalo was a revelation during his first season at Watford with 15 goals in 37 league appearances and his form prompted serious interest from then-United manager Louis van Gaal.

However, his form in front of goal tailed off dramatically during the first six months of his second season at the club with just one goal in 18 league games before moving to China.
