Arsenal to hand midfielder new deal

Arsene Wenger has been given the green light to hand midfielder Jack Wilshere a new long-term deal, according to the Sun.

The England international’s current deal runs until the end of the season and the Gunners boss had been wary of handing Wilshere a new contract due to doubts over his injury history.

When his loan stint at Bournemouth failed to have the desired effect, many felt that Wilshere’s time at Arsenal was drawing to a close.

However, he has remained injury free for the first half of the season and played a key role in Arsenal’s smooth progression to the next round of the Europa League.

Wilshere is free to discuss a pre-contract with foreign clubs as early as next week and Wenger is keen to extend his stay at the Emirates.

Everton, West Ham and Newcastle have all shown an interest in Wilshere, while AC Milan were pondering offering the Englishman a route out of the Premier League

The 25-year-old is in line to start against Crystal Palace on Thursday, with Arsenal looking to win for just the second time in the last six league outings.
