Juan Mata signs new Manchester United deal

Manchester United have confirmed Juan Mata has penned a new three-year deal running until the summer of 2021, with an option to a further 12 months.

Mata’s previous deal was due to expire at the end of the month and there as interest from Valencia, Barcelona and Arsenal.

United have been locked in talks with Mata’s camp for a number of months now and have finally made a breakthrough in talks.

It was originally reported Mata would only be handed a one-year extension but United have sanctioned a longer deal for the 31-year-old.

Mata has spent the last five years at United and has divided opinion among supporters during that time.

It was thought at one stage last season that all three of the native Spanish players at United would leave Old Trafford this summer.

Ander Herrera will leave United when his contract expires this summer, with Paris Saint-Germain his most likely destination, while there is no new deal in sight for David de Gea, who has 12 months left to run on his contract.

Mata, meanwhile, has pledged his future to United and is a valued member of the squad despite the fact he only started 16 league games last season.

Statistics suggest Mata should play more regularly as United have only lost three of the 39 league games he has started since August 2017 compared to 13 defeats in the 37 league matches he has not started.
