West Ham want Manchester United goalkeeper

West Ham are eyeing a summer move for Manchester United goalkeeper Sam Johnstone, claims The Daily Mirror.

David Moyes side are not interested in keeping Joe Hart beyond the end of his loan deal from Manchester City and will sign a new goalkeeper this summer.

The former United manager has an eye on his former club by prising Johnstone away from Old Trafford in a deal worth £4m.

Johnstone, who is currently on loan at Aston Villa, does not appear to have a long-term future at his boyhood club.

Jose Mourinho rates 21-year-old Joel Pereira very highly at United and he is the club’s new third choice goalkeeper, meaning Johnstone is likely to leave on a permanent deal at the end of the season.

Villa boss Steve Bruce is desperate to prolong Johnstone’s stay at the club but their chances of signing the 25-year-old may hinge on promotion to the Premier League.

Johnstone’s contract was due to expire at the end of the season but United triggered a 12-month extension in February in order to retain some sell-on value.

Of Championship goalkeepers that have made at least 20 appearances this season, Johnstone has the best save success rate (76.7%).
