Wolves leapfrog Arsenal in race for new centre-back

Wolves have lodged a €30m bid for Juventus centre-back Daniele Rugani after cooling their interest in Benfica’s Ruben Dias, reports Football Italia.

The Italian defender has been on Arsenal’s radar in recent weeks as the Gunners seek defensive reinforcements.

Arsenal are believed to have made a loan bid for Rugani as head coach Unai Emery aims to add another centre-back before Thursday’s transfer deadline.

Juventus rejected the proposal of a two-year loan with an option to buy and it remains to be seen whether the Gunners will return for Rugani.

It’s seen Wolves move to the front of the queue to land the 25-year-old, who has found first team opportunities hard to come by.

Rugani was previously viewed as a long-term centre-back option for the Old Lady, but now finds himself behind Giorgio Chiellini, Leonardo Bonucci and Matthijs de Ligt in the pecking order.

Maurizio Sarri’s preference for a four-man backline means Rugani would struggle for a regular starting spot in Turin.

Wolves would need to act swiftly to get the deal over the line before Thursday’s 5pm deadline.

If they can land Rugani, however, the Italian will be their second defensive signing this summer following the arrival of Jesus Vallejo on loan from Real Madrid.
