Benitez open to signing new Newcastle deal

Rafa Benitez has opened contract talks with Newcastle but will only commit to a new deal if he is given assurances over this summer’s transfers, claims The Daily Mirror.

The Spaniard’s future at Newcastle has been uncertain ever since he guided the Magpies back into the Premier League last season.

Benitez felt promises went unkept during last summer’s transfer window and the former Liverpool boss wants to avoid a repeat of that this time around.

The 58-year-old’s current deal is due to expire at the end of next season but he wants to build a dynasty at Newcastle.

However, a key part of Benitez’s desire to stay on at Newcastle is that the board deliver his key transfer targets, which they failed to do last summer.

The Magpies have hit top form at the perfect moment to all but secure their top-flight status next season, winning four of their last five matches.

Newcastle need nine points from their last 12 available to better their points tally from the 2013/14 campaign under Alan Pardew (49).
