Newcastle captain to undergo hernia surgery

Jamaal Lascelles will finally undergo a double hernia operation on Tuesday after Newcastle secured promotion back to the Premier League, reports The Sun.

The Newcastle captain has been playing through the pain barrier for the last four months of the season but Rafa Benitez and the club’s medial staff kept the problem under wraps.

Lascelles was determined to help Newcastle secure promotion back to the Premier League at the first time of asking and was happy to delay the surgery until their objective was secure.

It means the Newcastle captain will be unavailable for their final game of the season at home to Barnsley as the Magpies bid to overtake Brighton and win the Championship.

Only Anthony Knockaert, Marc Roberts and Yann Kermorgant (all 8) have been awarded more WhoScored Man of the Match awards in the Championship this season than Lascelles (7).
